Terry Wash Cloth Baby Quilt, Free Quilt ProjectTerry Wash Cloth Baby Quilt

Amongst the large number of gifts that a newborn receives are sets of terry washcloths. A unique way to use them is to make a soft crib-size quilt for the baby using the terry cloths. The quilt is soft enough to use as a bedding for the baby. Old wash cloths and and terry bath or hand towels can also be used to make this project. This project is also great for beginners to start quilting with minimum materials and simple blocks.

Skill Level: Easy/Beginner

Block Size: 7" x 7"
Finished Size:
26" x 33"

Materials Required:

  • 6 blocks of baby blue terry cloth of 7 - 1/2" size
  • 6 blocks of baby pink terry cloth of 7 - 1/2" size
  • Blue Polka Dot print border strips of width 3-3/4 inch (measure the length of the quilt once the squares are set for accurate length and then cut the border strips)
  • Quilt batting of size 30" x 37"

Directions:

1. Pre-wash all fabrics to avoid shrinkage later.

2. Cut wash cloths or towels into squares of size 7-1/2".

3. Lay out all squares as shown in the picture. Stitch rows first and then sew all the 4 rows together.

4. Stitch border strips to the sides of the quilt and then to the top and bottom.

5. Place your batting, wrong side up and place the quilt over it, right side down. Stitch together the edges keeping an opening. Turn the quilt right side out stitching close the opening.

Your baby quilt is ready!

Tips:

1. Crib size quilts differ in sizes. For best results, measure the crib or bed before making the quilt.

2. This quilt is meant for a newborn baby. Babies soon outgrow small quilts. You can make the same quilt in a larger size by adding more rows and columns to the quilt.

3. This quilt has been made using two colors. You can use as many colored washcloths as you have. Avoid using white as baby quilts need to be washed very often.

4. Use a strong backing which will survive the many washes a baby quilt goes through.

5. Terry cloths come in different qualities. Use only the best quality to avoid the disappointment when the cloth starts linting. Use a lint-free or near lint-free cloth.
